York University was established in 1959 as an affiliate of the University of Toronto and became independent in 1965. Today, York is Canada’s third largest university, offering full and part-time graduate and undergraduate degree programs to almost 50,000 students through 11 faculties. York prides itself on its interdisciplinary approach to higher education which provides students with a complete learning experience. Each year, the 8,000 students that graduate from York do so with a broad perspective on the world and a desire to push the limits of change. York is one of Canada’s most multicultural universities with over 155 countries of origin represented among its students, researchers and teachers; an attribute of which the York community is very proud. The Atkinson Faculty of Liberal and Professional Studies, better known as Atkinson, has been shaping students into professionals in numerous industries since 1962. Alumni of Atkinson’s Administrative Studies program are distinguished in all areas of business. Many former Administrative Studies students occupy the roles of Partner, Vice-President, Director and Senior Manager in firms across Toronto, and abroad. Atkinson Administrative Studies graduates are particularly well-represented at every level in Canada's top ten accounting firms. York University is proud that its Administrative Studies alumni play such a significant role in today's business world. The Administrative Studies community is fortunate that many former Administrative Studies students who have moved on to successful business careers, have a strong desire to give back to their community. Today, Administrative Studies alumni part take in “Industry Night”, information seminars, and other events targeted towards helping current students enter the workforce. In 2009, Atkinson, which housed York University’s School of Administrative Studies, merged with the Faculty of Arts, creating York’s new Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS). York’s School of Administrative Studies continues to produce high quality business professionals through the new faculty.
York University’s new Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS) is home to 27,000 students. The new LA&PS looks to establish itself as one of the elite faculties in the country, and to carry on the legacies of those faculties which it has merged. In keeping with York’s interdisciplinary approach to education, the LA&PS looks to offer an unprecedentedly well-rounded learning experience to its students. The various Administrative Studies programs now offered by the LA&PS encourage the sharpening of critical thinking, analytical, interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills, all of which are vital for success in the business world. Administrative Studies courses offered through the new LA&PS emphasize the application of theory to real-world situations by using practical and hands-on approaches to business education. Presentations, seminars, use of case studies, and lectures by guest speakers are common methods of classroom teaching utilized by the LA&PS. A flexible learning experience enriched with active student associations, distinguished faculty, modern facilities, and endless support services, the Administrative Studies programs at York develop students that are adaptable, dynamic, and strong – ready to make a positive impact on the business world!
